Norman Green Artist Statement "The landscape became my dominant subject of interest after driving across country, and living for a summer on Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest. I had been painting close-ups of flowers until then, and unexpectedly my focus expanded. I found myself obsessed with the larger view of the world around me. Nature's magnificent, and ever-changing landscape became my new love after having been enamored with flowers and creatures for years. The drama of the seasons, presented their endless variety of scenery, with the muted quality of winter, the fullness of summer, the dazzling colors of autumn, along with their incredible cloud formations of extraordinary light and color, inspired me to record them. This new landscape affection, draws me to use pastels, with their soft blending qualities, subtlety of tones, and linear effects, Pastels with their multitude of color choices are uniquely made for creating the wondrous skies, that have become a more dominant portion of my compositions. Although I've put aside flowers, and creatures temporarily, they are not forgotten. They will always fascinate me, and I will drift back and forth from Pastel, to Watercolor, and Pen & Ink, along with the subject, that dictates the approach. Watercolors allow me to explore flowers, their shapes, textures, colors, with the softness, luminosity and intensity that is inherent in the medium. When I feel the subject needs more detail, I use dip pens with colored inks and create a surface that gives the essence of an etching, and for a more graphic approach I add shapes, borders, and insets. To create my "Flower Portraits", I use a close-up lens that allows me to capture a more intimate view that catches their natural lighting and sensuous character. For my landscapes, I use my photographs of the more distant views, keeping the feeling of the outdoors with its ever changing light, while retaining their spontaneity of spirit.
As an award winning Illustrator/Designer for over 35
years, I feel that my commercial experience enhances the way I compose and
finish a painting. Painting and drawing have always been a spiritual experience
for me, communing with the whole of nature, both large and small give me joy and
satisfaction. Ultimately, I hope to show the viewer the beauty and the
remarkable visual excitement that is all around us. I present a piece of nature,
more visible and focused, something you want to look at again and again." |
